From Falcons to Flocks: Insights from Year Two of Pilbara Bird & Bat Surveys

pilbara fauna zoology ecologist

Spectrum Zoologists have just wrapped up the second year of bird and bat utilisation surveys for a wind farm project in the Pilbara, Western Australia. These surveys are designed to determine the diversity of bird and microbat species in the region, while also collecting detailed flight data and behavioural observations. The information gathered is critical for collision risk modelling and to guide future post-construction monitoring.

The survey area, located near Marble Bar, has thrown up some demanding conditions – soaring temperatures above 50°C and summer flash floods. Yet, the post-wet season transformation of the landscape has been remarkable. Highlights included breathtaking flocks of budgerigars, sometimes numbering in the thousands, and several sightings of Grey Falcons—one of Australia’s rarest raptors.

With year 2 now complete, the team is preparing to head back into the field for year 3, this time looking forward to the more welcoming spring conditions.
